Adobe Reader in Safari

Got a problem with Adobe Reader - recently downloaded the newest version, and it automatically set itself as the default pdf reader in Safari. This is a pain, as it's completely overburdened with functions...

Tried to unset it, but the button was turned off in the Adobe reader preferences (this is new, I think...)

So, I uninstalled. But still PDFs ran in Adobe... turned out a thing called AdobeViewer had installed itself as well.

So I uninstalled that - and now any online pdfs don't show up in Safari at all.

Am I just collatoral damage in the war between apple and adobe? Either way, it's not a good feeling...

Any advice anyone?

You are not collateral damage. You just don't know how your system works. With no additional software installed on your system, the QuickTime Internet plug-in handles PDFs. You changed that when you installed Adobe Reader. However, you did not change it back when you removed Reader. You may select QuickTime as the default handler for PDF images in QuickTime preferences.

Hi Mister Me,

thanks for the answer. Not being able to uncheck the "Display PDF in browser" option in the Adobe Reader Internet preferences seems a little aggressive on Adobe's part, but I'll let it pass - if I knew everything about how my system works, I wouldn't be posting here.

Just to prove it - I just started QuickTime (10.0 118), but couldn't find Preferences.. (eg. under Cmd Comma or File - only Service Prefences for Keyboard etc.) Where are they?

Also - this may be naive, but I thought I was seeing PDFs in Safari displayed in Preview, not Quicktime. Are Quicktime settings really the way to access Preview in Safari? Hardly intuitive!
