I have a two API-800 pyro drives from ADS Tech that lock up all the time, but did not used to. Not sure what caused it.
I am still waiting to hear back from ADS tech support.
My typical scenario:
1) turn on an API-800 and retrieve a file.
2) continue to work on computer, without accessing any files from the API-800 drive (e.g. internet activity).
3) after about 10-15 minutes, try to access another file on the API-800 and the Finder locks up.
Here is my Hardware Overview:

Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1 GHz
