aDSL/DSL... upload bandwidth variable?

I know the difference between "asynchronous" DSL and tegular, but regarding both I have a question.

If I am doing a big download, does that reduce the bandwidth for uploads. I know aDSL has less upload bandwidth, but I'm not clear if it is fixed or if it changes based on what is being downloaded...

Anoyone know?

ADSL does have a smaller amount of uploading capacity. When you download something at the max of your download speed, you will be sending a lot of acknowledge(ACK) packets back to the server saying you have received the packets you are downloading. The server needs to know this so it can send you more data.

The ACK packets can take up a lot of your upstream bandwidth. So, if you have 128Kbps upstream bandwidth, and 1.5Mbit downstream bandwidth, the ACK packets may consume your entire upstream, making your uploads very slow.

Hope that clears it up for ya
