adsl with macosx

Hi
I have a G4 with MACOSX on it.
If I want to try to install an adsl modem
it returns a 17 at the Identitycontrol, and will not go on.

somebody knows what this means and what to do about it?

I use a router connected to the dsl modem, but let's see... Are you connected to the modem by ethernet cable? Are you setting up the Mac to connect to your ISP by PPoE? Do you have the Built-in Ethernet set to use DHCP to configure?

sorry for the short description, but the problem is solved, we used a usb moden connected to a router (with usb support)
the router was for internet connected to the airport.

This didn't work!

so we bought a modem with router in it , hook it up to the airport an now its running like hell.
