I'm thinking of getting a home laser printer as my HP Inkjet 6180 is expensive to run for the ink cartridges. any recommendations and anything to look out for?

That looks sweet, Iceman.

It should be cheaper to use than regular HP Laserjets, although here in Cairo the toner is more expensive than standard HP cartridges that come with a drum. That is probably just an economy of scale thing - most printers sold her are HP.

A thing to watch out for is (nod to Capt' Obvious) is that they work with the Mac. Many of the HP LaserJets (1018 - 1020 to name two) are Windows only.

Brother has good rep with Macs, but I have a networked HP (admittedly, an InkJet), which uses Bonjour - setup is a snap.

thanks for that, I'm thinking of going for black and white to print just mostly letters unless there is a really cost effective laser (colour) - my big concern is cost really, of the cartridges.

You'll save money on cartridges the _instant_ you go from inkjet to laser for b/w printing. Take a look at the Brother and HP printers that are available and Mac compatible. Ask for printer cartridge prices locally (and on the 'net). I've had my Brother 5040 for quite a while and it's perfect for letters etc. –*It sucks at anything graphics (all cheap lasers do), but that's not what I bought it for. Generally speaking: Find models that seem "okay" to you and ask for cartridge pricing (and for how many thousand pages they're intended, although this measurement might vary between makers, it might give you an idea of the price).

Bonjour is becoming a given. Even Dell has adopted it. From where I sit, HP is living on long-past glory. fryke recommends Brother, an excellent choice. I love Xerox, which also supports Bonjour. Although toner is more expensive, color printers are not substantially more expensive than B&W. Color lasers and phase change printers are cheap enough that B&W laser printers are now specialty items.
