Advice needed.

I'm looking to buy a 17" LCD and I have set my eye on the Formac 1740. Is this a good choice or should I look at other LCD's?

Does anyone one of you have it, if so I would like to know of your experience with it.

Also do you know where I can get it cheapest?

I highly advise looking at the LCDs in person. You can know all the specs, but they really don't tell you much about the picture quiality. The Apple LCDs I believe, are Samsungs for the most part, so they're a good one to look at. I've seen a lt of nice looking Sonys as well.

I noticed someone had a Formac display in one of the more recent "Show us your setup" threads. I don't think there were many entries in that one, so you can probably find that person pretty easily.

Thank a bunch...I appreciate it. Nice setup btw. How the **** did he get two cd trays in his QS?

From the reviews of the Formac's I've heard they were about on par with Apple's 17 inch display, and a 100 bucks cheaper. I don't have one, but I'm just passing the word ;)

i'd like to know also... but he probably just put in a 2nd CD drive and then glued or snapped on the front thingy (what's it called... a bezel? )

gee, i wish i had enough money to buy my dream-screen... *sniff*

cinema display 22 inch, see you soon (hopefully)...

in a showroom, it is the first LCD I would consider for professional design work, it was fantastic. But, I haven't used it a work environment.

I was more impressed by the formac than the apple LCD!;)

I think in a head to head review, the Formac beat the Apple 17" LCD. I believe it was Macworld, so you can search their site for it.

Buying an LCD sight unseen is tricky. I was all set to buy a Planar 17" LCD because of the price, but after looking at it in the store for 5 minutes, I opted instead for the 17" Viewsonic LCD. It was $200 more, but the image was much clearer.

the *image was clearer*? ... i've never seen an lcd with an _unclear_ image so far - unless the resolution was not the native one, of course. they basically differ in the color quality, possible viewing angles and the brightness/contrast (which of course look very different in a showroom than a t home or at work, unless you live or work in a showroom).

btw., while my tibook's lcd looks VERY bad when i have it next to my 17" cheapo LCD (~600$ here in switzerland), it's still a very good screen when i use it without the other one on next to it. so, even a screen that looks a bit dim next to a brighter one (that might cost you between 100$ and 200$ more) you won't HAVE that brighter one next to it when you take the cheaper one home.

of course, better is still better, can't change that. but it's often more expensive, too. i'd go with apple's style if you have the money or buy the cheapest one that has an acceptable quality.

Compare the cheap LCDs with the more expensive ones. The cheaper ones look like they have smudged text. Usually it's hard to discern with movies, which is why at CompUSA they have most of their LCDs attached to a PC playing a DVD, which makes it hard to really tell how sharp the image can be. But if you compare them with text on the screen, the difference between the el cheapo monitors and the more expensive ones becomes quite clear.
