AIM disconnects every five minutes [firewall related]

Fahrvergnuugen

I am the law!
I have a Linksys DI 804 router / firewall / gateway which allows me to share my Road Runner connection. The network seems to be pretty good with the exception of AIM. I have my AIM port set to 9898. Everytime I get disconnected it seems that an entry is made in the "intruder detection log" on the firewall. I think what's happening is that the firewall sees that the ports do not match up and when AIM doesn't get the packet, it disconnects. Anybody have any ideas?

I have a Linksys router as well, sharing our RoadRunner connection, but we have never had problems with AIM disconnecting. What version of AIM are you using, OS 9 or X (although the X version is just a carbonized 9 app. You can actually use the AIM X version in 9 if you want)?. Looking at my AIM settings, the default port is 5190. You say yours is 9898. Why is it different? Did you change it on purpose? Perhaps going back to the default port will fix the problem.

I have a question for you. Are you familiar with the DMZ hosting feature of your Linksys router? If so, could you explain to me how this works? If I setup a server on my comp, turn on the port using DMZ hosting, what IP address can I give out so others can connect to my computer?

DMZ stands for DeMilitarized Zone. Its a place where the firewall doesn't protect the computer from the internet [which I am fine with, I wish there was a way to just disable the damn firewall].

I am using the most current version of AIM for OSX. I set it to port 9898 [the port that fire uses] because I seem to get disconnected less when on this port. I thought maybe it had something to do with the fact that there are two computers running AIM all the time on the same port.

I have also found that the less buddies I have in my buddy list, the longer it stays connected. My current buddy list has 150+ buddies on it. I used an older name of mine that only has 8 names and I didn't have any problems.

The worst part about it is you'll be right in the middle of talking to someone, you hit enter and the message doesn't go through. it takes AIM a good 3 or 4 minutes before it tries to reconnect on its own.

Incredibly agravating.

Use the Virtual Server to route specified ports to your machine on the lan. IE: map port 80 to your mac's 192.168.0.XXX address then visit http://your.real.ip.address
I just tried turning off the virtual server..I'm curious to see if that's what's causing this problem.
