AirPort 802.11b

I was wondering, since AirPort base stations are so damn expensive, can I just buy any other kind of 802.11b transmission station and have it work just as well?

Definately. My mom has a Linksys Wireless Router at my folks place, and when I go home for holidays I bring along my iBook and just use their network. Many of them are cheaper and have better range the BaseStation.

The only hitch is, some of these 'basestations' must be setup by a PC. So just check that out before you buy, that is, if you only have a Mac.

I believe that if you have a computer with an airport card which can be plug into the phone line that can serve as a base station. If not i'm sure that there are other companies that make mac compatible 802.11 systems
