Airport Express and remote connection suddenly drops

I had to get a router so I could connect the panasonic g20 to the internet. I have a computer about ten feet away which is fine; the computer in the back office is the problem.

The connection (for the computer in the back) though not bad with the router, is not as good as when I had both the APEs set up to relay (actually remote) to the back. Even then, though, that connection was about third of that in the den (where the modem is.)

The connection with the router now is 18mbs when you in that room. So, that's fine. Netgear N300.

I have two APES: One is an "N" and the other "B/G." In theory (I say in theory because I can never really tell and this was numerous resets later) they are not just "joined" they are "participating" in a wds network. I plugged the "N" into the router which is now plugged into the modem (the only difference between what I had set up before, is there wasn't a router involved; the connection of the APE went directly to the modem, because as we know, the APE can act like a router).

After numerous attempts to get everything to play nice, in one of the countless attempts, I did get a new message asking if I'd like the "N" to act as a bridge, so I answered, "ABSOLUTELY!" (This was about the 10th attempt to get the two APEs to see one another at the same time).

So, the "N" is the base station for the APEs. the "B/G" is the remote. And the only difference between what I had set up, and now, is the "N" is attached to the router via ethernet. I've turned things off, on, rebooted, reset, etc.

Now, prior to the Netgear, the signal to the back office was about 6mbs on a good day. In the den: 18-20. I would see a full airport "fan" for signal strength. I could stream video, podcasts, some buffering, but not bad.

Here's what's happening: When I sign onto the network for the APEs I get a great signal strength for about 5 seconds, then down to the second "Airport" bar.

Speedtest shows about 2-3mbs. The computer in the den where the "N" and router are is 18mbs (again, for reference.)

Without the "b/g" remote, reset, etc., the "N" connection is .5-1mbs. So, obviously, I need the remote APE.

What would cause the drop?
Why can't I get it back to where it was at least?

The networks are all set up (in theory) to be running wds and require a password.

Any ideas as to interference? Is it the new router? Any work arounds?
Only thing I haven't done is disconnect the router and reconnect the APEs directly to the modem and test the connection in the back to see if the router is causing the problem.

Thank you.
