Airport Express Base Station + Linksys WPM54G

I have an Apples Airport Express Base Station that broadcasts to 2 dif. computers....1-is an EMAC, the other is WIN XP box. We also have recent wireless 2.4GHz phone in same household. I had Comcast spend 2 hours(!!) here and while I now understand that the phone is a separate problem BUT the tech. guy could not figure out why the Linksys Wireless Adapter Card(WPM54G) at my XP box will not show internet "speed" of greater than 2.8 Mps (as measured by various 'speedtests' on the Internet)yet the EMAC does almost 6.0 Mps! I called Linksys..their tech told me that it is due to differing technologies that that the Apple Base Station uses and that which Linksys uses to send packets. This same Linksys person told me that I should be happy with what I am getting! The Comcast tech. said that I should be getting 6.0....but he doesn't know why I max at 2.8....he has seen enough Linksys gear that he thinks I should be able to register 6.0 but that he is at a loss to explain why. I replaced the WPM54G with another new idential one and the speed remained same, 2.8-ish. My XP box's motherboard is Athlon 64-2800....using it's on board Ethernet with a cable went right up to 6.0-ish!!

Can anyone out there suggest anything helpful? In stating my problem I tried to follow Mark Twain's adage, "There is no greater lie than a problem poorly stated."
