i cant get airport express to share the internet, its letting people join the network but only the first person to connect can use the net

i have an adsl modem (dsl-300g) which is connected to the net
by default the ethernet port on the modem is set to 10.1.1.1
i can see using the modems built in webserver that it is connected to the net with the ppp ip address of 203.217.43.187

the modem is connected to the airport express via an ethernet cable,
the ethernet port on the aiprort express is set to 10.1.1.3
at the moment that ip address is set manually,
though i have also tried using dhcp.

my airport card has connected to the wireless network using dhcp
and has set the settings

ip 203.217.43.187
mask 255.255.255.255
router 203.217.43.187

i'm suprised that that works but here i am happily netting away.

but if anyone else tries to connect to the net they get something like

ip 10.1.1.4
mask 255.0.0.0
router 10.1.1.1

i'd have thought that that would work, but no, they can ping the airport extreme and the modem, some times even the modem's external ip 203.217.43.187

but thats as far as they can go.

if we all restart our machines, whoever connects first will connect and work, other machines will get 10.1.1.... adresses and not be able to access the net.

does anyone understand this?

if they can ping the external ip, you think they could ping the world, perhaps they can, perhaps the pings just don't find their way back?

any ideas?

thanks for you help

ok.. um. turn off DHCP. or don't use it. give the workstations IPs in the same subnet as the internal port. so, .1 and .3 are taken. start from .10

make sure the subnet is the same. i would imagine it would be 255.255.255.0

make the router/gateway the internal port on the modem (.1)

try to ping the Airport Express. try to ping the internal modem port. try to ping each other. try to ping the external modem port.

no tried that, and could no longer ping the modem external address, even thought that seems the sensisble answer.

turned dhcp on on my computer again
ip 203.217.43.187
mask 255.255.255.255
router: 203.217.43.187

and i'm back on the net

but no-one else can connect

That's really bizzarre(SP) that you are getting your WAN IP when you connect to the network.

The one thing that seemed odd is the ip configuration of the router and the modem. Typically you don't need to worry about the address on the modem, and the router/gateway should be 10.1.1.1 because 1 in the last octet is reserved for the router or gateway just as 255 is broadcast.

Are you sure that your express has internet sharing I've never used an Airport express, but did you make sure that sharing was on for sure?

thank you,
that was part of the answer.

i set my adsl modem to work on 10.0.1.2
so that it could work with airports default address range of 10.0.1.X

then i gave snail (the airport express) a factory reset my taking it out of the socket and holding down the reset butto while i reinserted it into the power socket
(keep holding the button till the light flashes green four times)

now its happy

thanks
for the help

You might also check if your ISP allows multiple users on your account. It may only issue one IP to one computer. After that you're locked out. Just a guess.
