Airport Extreme: With Antenna Port or Without

Hey folks.

This is my first post here. I got back in to macs after a long hiatus and bought a 12-inch PowerBook, which I really like so far. I thought this might be a good place to ask some questions...

I'm going to get an Airport Extreme base station, but I'm not sure if I should get the more expensive model or not. I have no use for the modem, but I thought the antenna port might come in handy. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Welcome :)

The antenna port might be handy if you move your mac to different rooms in your home and take you further than the 150 feet limit.
From Apple:
The external antenna connector for extending your wireless connectivity even further, beyond the 150-foot range of your built-in internal antennas (you can choose to connect either a directional or an omnidirectional antenna). And the USB connector for Mac OS X v10.2.3 ?Jaguar? printer sharing

It would be worth it if you know that you might be moving. You then will be prepared for any place.

Cheryl,

Well, my house has aluminum siding, which I hear stops 802.11 dead. I'd like an antenna to boost the range into my yard, but I don't want to gain that possibility only to still be stopped by the siding.

Thanks.

I would suggest reading reviews of Dr. Bott's antennas. From what I've heard, they boost the signal ... zilch. One review I read said that they got the exact same reception whether the antenna was plugged in or not.
