Airport networking without Base Station

I'm reading a book on Jaguar which suggests that if I get 2 airport cards, one for my G4 tower and one for my G4 PowerBook, I can use the tower as a 'base station' without having to spend money on an Airport Base Station. So if I share my internet connect from the tower I will be able to surf wireless on my laptop.

Is this really true? Does that mean I can share my files between the two Macs wirelessly too?

I read this same thing in Mac Addict, and while I believe it does work, I would imagine it does not have the range of an Airport. But I might be wrong. If you are anyone else tries it, let me know!

Thanks

Matthew

It actualy does have a fairly good range. I've never worked with an airport basestation although the majority of the time I've seen a tower and an ibook reach around the advertised 250 to 300 ft.

This does work, much the same as networking computers with wires and two NICs in one machine.

The only problem with this is that you have to always have your sever machine on to use the client.

If you can deal with that, then you're set!

Well, I went for it and bought just the 2 airport cards.

I'm now sitting upstairs, working on my Powerbook connected to the internet via my G4 tower downstairs. all wirelessly!

The connection seems to be very fast too :D

does it involve any further setup.. or does the tower just recognize the lack of a base station and ask if you want it to act as one?

The setup is very minimal and it's all with software configuration. You just have to set the host machine to work as a base station and after a few clicks you're done.

You'll need to be running OS 10.2 to share your Internet connection. I didn't have to install any software once I'd installe the actual Airport card. Jaguar just recognises the new hardware and an Airport icon appears in the menu bar. Click on it to set up Airport networking. It was all pretty clear what to do. As Juxel says, "a few clicks"...
