Aluminum Keyboard Problem

I have a MacBook Pro running 10.4.11 with 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Dui and 4Gb of Ram.

I recently purchased a new aluminum keyboard (sans number pad) and connected it to my MBPro.

I quickly noticed that my special keys on the top are not working (e.g. Volume, Screen Brighten, etc). The function keys work fine, but the other features associated with them do not.

I already have gone to my preferences and selected the option to have the Function not function and still no luck.

I have not found a post answering this question.

In the instructions it says that you need OSX 10.5 to use the keyboard and it's functions. Is there not a way to make it work with OSX 10.4.11?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Correct. If the system requirements are Leopard or better, then the best you can probably do is use other software to map the function keys to the desired actions.
