Anyone try Tri-Backup?

Just received an external 40 gig firewire hard drive for backing up my ibook (OS 9.2.1 and OSX 10.1.1) and my imac (9.2.1)

I have retrospect express that I could use for the imac.

Thinking of trying Tri-backup for my ibook. How does it work?

Can I just drag my hard drive directly on top of the firewire disk icon to make a full copy instead of buying software?

I have never used Tri-Backup...

The advantage of using a backup program like Retrospect is it allows you to make incremental backups, then you can say, backup something from 2 weeks ago, opposed to the version of the file you last updated, say yesterday.

Yes, you could drag and drop, but you may also run into some issues of copying "active" files.

Retrospect doesn't have a Mac OS X version, but they hope to 1st QTR of 2002. I am looking forward to it, as I backup 3 Macs and Windows box, to a VXA drive. Now, if they would just get a Linux client. :)

Who can wait till the first quarter of next year to back up? Not me.

I have tried the demo of tri-backup and it will only copy a few files. Seems to work pretty well and is intuitive enough, just not sure if it really works. What is the point of having a demo if it can't show you if it works. French b#@$#&!

I thought I read somewhere that the reason Retrospect was taking so long is because the hidden files are hard to back up or something to that effect.

I was able to make a complete backup of my imac running OS 9.2.1 by dragging the hard disk to the firewire disk icon. This does not work for my ibook which has osx on it. That is a shame.

Ended up dragging what I could on my ibook to my external disk. Probably got the important things...but who really knows?

Dantz is having issues (Unix issues) with things like hard links vs soft links, etc. Basically, they want to be able to do a complete backup and be able to do a full restore before they call it functional. They also want 10 weeks to beta test it, once these issues are fixed.

It appears to be a OS issue and not a dantz issue, but I am sure it is a combination of both parties.

I imagine, based upon Dantz information that another release of 10.1 will be coming probably in January, which will allow enough time to finish beta testing by end of the 1st qtr 2002.

I backup my Mac OS X partition while running 9.2.1, and it seems to backup everything just fine. It may not provide a "complete working restore" but getting necessary data files is all I need off that partition since I have yet to make a full move to OS X for obvious reasons.

Interesting. I will try to drag my osx files to the external disk while being in 9.2.1. Will report back what happens.

It would be nice to have a good back up solution however that automatically restores things vs. manual. Other than this, I am glad I am using osx.

Admin.
I think you are right about the active file thing. When I was in 9.2.1 I was able to drag my system to the disk as well as the User folder. These two folders could not be copied completely when I was booted in osx. There was also some problem copying the Apps folder. I assume this would work but I didn't try it in os9.

I took the plunge and purchased it. It is easy and fast if you don't use the compression mode. Since I have plenty of space in my external disk I chose not to compress.

Appears to copy everything. Shows a folder for hidden files and some other odd named folders that I have not seen before. I ran a few apps and tried my imovies and some office files. Everything seems in order. What a relief.

What's really nice is you can see your backup files easily without having to open Tri-backup to do so.

Glad you like it. I have been using Retrospect since 1996. I was first introduced to it in a corporate atmosphere, a large telecommunications company.

I think it is awesome. User friendly, to the point. Isn't buggy.
