Randomly with a normal system and console log, Apache stops serving web pages. If I go to the server and browse localhost, Apache starts serving again. I am using Panther 10.3.9 and Apache 1.3. I can not trace the source of the error and this is after the system ran for 6 months without a single pause. I recently updated the new Java and security patches as required. The only sign I get that something is wrong is that I get a lookupd error - I have tried unlockupd and this does not solve the problem. This can occur even if 2 users are on the system - so it has nothing to do with overload. Could it be something on my local company network that is cause the freeze. When this happens I can not even ping the IP address. There is no response. Then after about 30 seconds, if I do nothing Apache starts serving pages again. Puzzled.
