Apple Disk Copy

If I copy a mac os 9 volume using apple disk copy will it copy the invisible files as well? Will it be a bootable volume once copied back to an empty volume?

I have spent the last couple of days reading up about Apple Software Restore and Disk Copy to clone a volume and it seems like all the methods described have a lot of unnecessary steps, rather than use ASR to do the trick why couldn't I just create an image of the volume I want to install "in place"? There doesn't seem to be any equivilent to symantecs "Ghost" for mac except Carbon Copy Cloner which seems to be for OS X only.

Any help, comments or suggestions are much appreciated.

i'm not quite sure of your question. if you want os 9 on another drive just drag and drop your os 9 system folder to the other drive. if you are looking to make a boot disk and using disk burner, somebody else will have to help you. if you are using toast, it is simple when booted in os 9. i can tell you how or you can find the complete instructions in the faq at www.roxio.com

Ed,

I want to make an image that will restore "in place" giving me all the settings, software I have installed, etc. I need to roll this out to a bunch of machines either by disk (firewire), network or cd. I have read the stuff on using Apple Software Restore images. It just seems more complicated then I want to get.

TIA...J

ok, i've got no experience with this kind of thing but perhaps you might have an idea as to why this wouldn't work -

copy the os 9 system folder to the firewire disk. now take it and plug it into another mac. reboot with the firewire drive. copy the system foler to the HD. now boot back to the new system after choosing it in startup disk control panel. done.

or do the same with a boot cd if you can fit everything on to it.

you would need to reboot no matter how you go about it, even with restore disks, right?

i'm sure this isn't what you mean by 'in place', but it is simple enough and should work i think.

Using Apple Disk Copy will do exactly what you want. It will create a disk image of your system folder that you can save to any removable media or secondary drive.

The system folder holds your settings for all your applications in the preference folder. You shouldn't need to copy the programs unless you lost those cd installers also.

I have an Apple Restore CD building software bundle. It comes with some basic instructions. It will allow you to make a restorable image CD. It is a rather large download. please contact me if you are interested.
