Apple just lost a G5 sale

I though I'd go with a provocative title to get things going.

I was originally going to buy a G5 in January. I am no longer going to. Why? Because Panther has made my DP G4 so much better that I no longer feel the urgent need. The GUI is much better. The workflow is much better (which is as important to me as raw CPU speed). Apps launch faster (about 20-30%) and some apps even perform slightly better (InDesign scrolls a little smoother). Multiprocessor performance is even smoother, and it was already quite good. Sure, I still have to wait five hours to encode a super-high quality DVD, but I'd rather hold out to get that number down to and hour and a half.

I'll definitely go G5 at some point, but I think I can hold it for Steve's promised 3 gig monster next year.

Is anyone else delaying upgrading due to Panther?

nice title!

I'm much the same - but not exactly the same reasons... I'm waiting for 3GHz in the Summer of 2004 and hoping 1GB RAM is going to come down by that time too!

I will be buying the new 17" PB (which I'm certain will be announced at MWSF) in February, and then the G5 PB "sometime by the end of next year" ;-)

Panther has been nothing but good for my PB - I love it!

I have a "mere" PowerMac 933 and PowerBook 1GHz so my Dual G5 is a logical boost even with Panther on those Macs :p But the Dual 3GHz beast will not be out of the question next summer! :D Especially with 10.4 on it a month or so later on ;)

I must admit, if I was still running Jaguar, I'd be itching for a new PowerBook in a year. Luckily, Panther makes my Mac faster still. This thing could last me at least another 2 years, now.

Mindbend, go ahead and buy your G5 and I'll take care of it until you need it. ;)

Yes, great thread, I just sold my G4 466 a few days before Panther arrived, so never got to test it on that machine. However, in the interim, whilst I save for the G5, I swapped all work over to my LCD iMac (15"). I cannot overestimate how Panther has improved my workflow... jeez, Exposé! Wow! I am now pondering holding off 'til January's announcements (yes, even though I'm designing-developing on a 15" screen!)
