apple keyboard

Hi,
I have just purchased a new wired keyboard. the key actions are not synced with the symbols on the keys e.g. question mark types an underscore. have tried and failed to find the fix. How do i get the keys to match the symbols?
FYI i have a uk purchased macbook and a swiss - from the french speaking part - keyboard. bought the keyboard and a cinema screen for working at home.

another question is can i just plug and unplug my macbook from the screen in no particular order as i go from desktop to laptop mode? Or is there a sequence that i required to save me from a mac melt down armageddon?

There's a system preference about regional settings. You can't set one keyboard to Swiss French and the other to English UK. You have to choose either or, i.e. one of your two keyboards will be "off-key".
