Apple need to do more to promote gaming

A major area where PCs excell past Macs is the amount of games that are available: Grand Theft Auto Vice City, Deus Ex, the list goes on. Sure, there are the rare games that come out on the Mac (like Unreal Tournament 2003) but it's just not enough. How I'd kill for a copy of Grand Theft Auto Vice City on my Mac. What are the video cards for when we can't play the games? We were promised games galore on Mac OS X. There are hardly any. Please do more to promote gaming, contact gaming companies, tell them what you want. What we all want. A chance to have the Mac a serious gaming platform. Not 30% of the games PC users have...95, 97, 99% of gaming. On par. Come on Apple!

I still don't understand why gaming people use computers to play video games instead of consoles. I mean, consoles were built with the sole intention of running games. Aren't they really the best choice?

For me, load times are faster on my PC than my PS2.

Online gaming is better (in my opinion) on computers than consoles.

It's a different interface (mouse/keyboard, joystick, flight stick and throttle) so games can be designed with a different feel.

Computer monitors have better resolution/refresh rates than TV's and that means better image quality.

With some computer games you can make your own maps, your own mods, it's a whole new level of gaming. You really get "in" the game.

Apple's working on it. What would you personally suggest to make the gaming better? Apple's not making games themselves, but yes, they are working on it. Give some good ideas here guys, and I'll pass them ...

I dont play consoles much anymore, mostly just my NES and SNES. If I want to play today's games, I use the computer. The online experience with computers can never be matched with consoles.

Mac is slooowly getting better with the games (i.e. Aspyr made Medal of Honor; then theres Wolfenstein) but they need to work harder.

There are so many games I want to play: like Vice City, Battlefiled 1942, Doom 3....

I want to save up for a 128 MEG video card, but is it worth it?

Giaguara,
Apple, this year to me, have advanced more than they ever have. They're on record-breaking ground with Panther and the G5. They're headed in the right direction. Apart from games...

OK, people might not like what I have to say, but it's my opinion and I'm still gonna say it.

PCs have so many more games than Mac. I don't really worry myself in PC gaming, I'm more of a console person, but games is what really attracts people (mainly teenagers and young adults) to computers. Think about it: while Apple spend time promoting their systems' superiority in video editing they are attracting adults that love to video edit and creative minds. Meanwhile, on the other side of the wall walking into your nearest newsagent you can see numerous PC gaming magazines, full of brand new PC games. Ultimately, being my teenage years now, I can say that children have a HUGE influence on their parents/relatives in determining what sort of computer they want. For a system to be competitive and popular it needs to have a wide arrange of software. Apple announced 6000 native Mac OS X apps available today, but how many of these are blockbuster games? Unreal Tournament 2003? Grand Theft Auto Vice City? Not many. Maybe 10 if you're lucky. Meanwhile the PC software library expands daily in all genres, in particular gaming. I don't know what's so attractive about the PC platform for gaming, but there are so many things that are becomming available. If the Mac DOES get that rare game from the PC ported over, it comes months maybe years later (how old is UT 2003 and it just came out for Mac). I may sound like I'm badgering on, but I really feel like it's time that Apple contacted gaming companies, you know, Rockstar, Activision, Take 2, etc. and tell them that they're interested in having their games ported over, and perhaps invest more money than ever before in pushing the Macintosh as the superior gaming platform: after all, it is for pretty much everything else. I'd love to walk into my local video store and see 'PS2', 'Xbox', 'PC & Mac' up on the wall.

Feel free to reply with criticisms if you feel that you need to.

I agree. I love Macs, but there is a biased perception among PC users that the Mac platform is inferior because it lacks in the gaming environment. And no matter if this is correct or not, it'll hurt sales because some people will be hesitant to adopt Apple because of this.
I would think Apple needs a handful of games that just kick @$$. That make people say: hmmm, good game. Then they learn about the other benefits.

Have you ever seen an all-Mac Internet gaming café?

No? I didn't think so. That's because they wouldn't be very popular. They wouldn't have the popular games like Counterstrike, Battlefield: 1942, etc. These are the most popular at the café here in Modesto, which has 20 PC's and 4 Xboxes.

If every game released were a hybrid (including stuff like Ambrosia's offerings), then I'm sure we'd see a much higher gaming Mac % than gaming PC, because the Mac is simply better for the buck. Apple needs to strongly encourage game makers to make their games either hybrid, or quick ports.
