Apple sales so far for 2003

Here's an article from bloomberg with the summary of how apple did in computers and laptops in Jan '03. If the new laptops came out already, I'm sure apple would of made the top 5 in laptops. I guess we have to wait for Q2 or the end of 2003. What do you think the numbers will be at the end of the year ?

I think being number 5 in sales is pretty great when you only have 3.8% of the market. I also find it more than a little interesting that Dell did not make it on either list. I am sure they shipped and sold more units than the rest, but did not make as much on the sale of them.

Odd thing. The article says "retail" hardware sales. Does this imply that they are only counting sales through retail outlets and NOT online sales? The reason I ask is because Dell appears nowhere, and unless the world changed quite dramatically while I was stuck in NJ, Dell should be right up there on both lists.

That is possible, but my guess was that it is based on sales (money) and not the number of units shipped. What I mean is that Dell sells lots of computers, but maybe the cost of their Pc's are so low right now, that they are not making the same level of sales (money) as the more expensive computers.

Just a thought.

Doubt it. First "Sales" whether counted as units or dollars would still put Dell at or near the top. You're thinking of profits. Even then, they are known to be one of the few profitable pc manufacturers anyway. I'm still curious as to what those numbers mean.

The article clearly lists unit sales and dollar volume. It is not a matter of either/or because both are listed. The term "retail" is somewhat unclear. However, my best interpretation is that the survey is counting only sales in brick-and-mortar retail establishments. I seem to recall a similar survey about a year ago. It was as meaningless then as it is today.
