The nice little animation annoucing Oct 24th on Apple's site is using a lot of CPU ! 50% of my 1 GHz iMac !!!

And not just at load time, but continuous... until I load another page.

Well, Apple's current homepage with the Panther countdown ... when loaded, top tells me Safari is using between 35-45% CPU, when not loaded, Safari uses less than 5%. Odd.

same here on OSX.com i am at .8% and on Apple.com i am 42%, however this really isnt a huge deal since i am not usually on the apple index page that much

Maybe because it is using Java, Flash or something like that for counter? Anyone with expertise in web design might be of a great help here ;)

It's a simple javascript, the clock is a bunch of .gif's.

EDIT: Too much code to post. Just go there and view source. A lot of "document.write" tags in the body too. Maybe because of recent IE compatibility changes?

Well, they've changed it now in favour of the iTunes for Windows deal - and the countdown clock doesn't seem to appear anywhere else.

What am I going to do? - now I don't know how many days. hours, minutes and seconds it is until the release of Panther...
;)

Zammy-Sam, that site not only sucks, but uses about 80% of my clock time...
Porteous, for me, at least, the Panther count-down is still on the Apple Homepage in one of the small boxes near the bottom of the page. It is a Quicktime applet now though.
