Applications...

My OS X partition is running very low on space... just over 100MB left. I was wondering if it is ok to install applications onto a different partition or even a different HD? Does OS X want all the apps in the applications folder? or does it not care? If I did save the apps on a different HD, would the pref files and that jazz still save in the same spot ?

I put all of my 3rd-party apps on a separate partition, except for the ones that get updated by SU and the ones that provide Services. The prefs and app support files (if any) still are located in ~/Library.
The only problem I've encountered is the occasional update that can't find an app unless it's in /Applications. then I have to move the #$%^&* thing to do the update.

Crap... I wanted to put all the big apps like all the Macromedia MX stuff, and adobe web collection on a different HD. Do those apps even use Software Update ?

Nope. The only ones I know of that do are iTunes, DVD Player, Mail.app and IE. Basically the stuff that comes pre-loaded on your machine or the OS X installer CD.
I have Photoshop 7 and Flash MX on my separate partition right now, along with Office v.X and tons of others.

Have you tried putting an alias in the Applications folder pointing to the new location of your applications?
