Apply 17" display fades in and out randomly

Can anybody tell me what this problem is ...
I've an Apple 17" CRT display and it's only about 2 yrs old. Since I decided to change my resolution from 1024x768 @ 85 Hz to 1152x870 @75 Hz and back to 1024x768,
my monitor randomly fades out and back in randomly. It doesn't happen often but it has occurred 4-6 times even after changing back to original resolution.

Is my monitor beginning to die? Or is it just what happens when i change to a resolution my G4 Powermac doesn't like?
 
You mean the image fades to black and then back again? Sounds like a power issue, or perhaps a dying tube. Either way, it will probably be cheaper to get a new display than it would be to repair the old one.
 
How long has it been doing this? Ever since you got it?
Because it doesn't sound like a dying tube (it could be though), instead it sounds like a bad tube. Usually when switching resolutions on a dying tube the tube wouldn't just fade to black and back, it'd most likely show more visible signs.

But like pianophile said: it will be cheaper to buy a new one rather than fix the old one. Unless you're manually going to fix it yourself.
