Apps that stop working for no apparent reason

My osx copy of FileMaker Pro 6 stopped working a few months back. It starts to launch, shows the splash screen then just stops with no errors. Luckily my os9 version was fine (although very very slow until I cleaned up my classic system...but back to the point) and I've not been doing much databse stuff recently so I forgot about it. I tried reinstalling FM, and even after I did a clean osx reinstall and upgraded to Jaguar, and did another FM reinstall, it still didn't make any difference. I also noticed that the same thing happened to Project Builder when I was on 10.1.5 although I didn't get round to trying to fix it.

I tried everything I could think of with FM short of reformatting my drives. Any ideas?

PS I just tried it again out of curiosity and now FM doesn't get as far as the splash screen.
 
Are there any messages recorded on the console when you start it. Check using conlsole.app that may help. The problem is that what you have described is basically "it broke" there are a myriad of things that could be wrong so we'll need a bit more info.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of console, will give it a go and see what it comes up with. Thanks.
