Astronomic instrument, or antique game controller?

I'm a big fan of the Spirit & Odyssey missions, but every time I see the sundial the rovers are equipped with, they remind me of a familiar device...

My cousin had a 2600 'back in the day' -- the rubber boot fell off one of his sticks, and underneath it was just a rather uncomfy thin plastic rod. But the stick itself kept working.
