Audio feedback/squeal from Powerbook G4

I'm getting severe audio feedback/squeal in OS X (as of a few OS updates ago). If I hold my hand over the microphone it's worse. It starts with the volume set at about 30-40%. It does not occur when running with OS 9. I've reinstalled OS X. I think this is a software issue, not hardware as it only happens in OS X. I have a Logitech cordless keyboard (and mouse) which has a volume control - I thought the software for this was the cause, but it's the same without it.

My level of knowledge is high intermediate to expert - just so you know where to aim your answers :) Thanks.

How do you have the mic connected to the machine? OS X is suppose to sense what input you are using. But like normal mics and speakers, you should not have the mic too close to the speakers.

Uh, I believe wfdonald is referring to the PowerBook G4's internal microphone, which is inside the casing right next to the internal left speaker.... true? I'm baffled by this problem.

It is the internal microphone, which is under the left speaker grill.

Now I've discovered dual display - with an external monitor doesn't work (as of 10.2.4). Off I go in search of a cure for that :)

Uh... this may sound like a dumb suggestion.... but have you tried "zapping the PRAM?" Hold down Command-Option-P-R at startup and hold it down until you hear the startup chime a second time..... does that get rid of the problem?

Well, adambyte, turns out it wasn't a dumb suggestion after all. How I missed zapping the pram I don't know. Must've been so long since I had to do it (with OS X) - standard practice with OS 9 wasn't it? And there's me saying what a super user I am - 'Oh the shame' Thanks.
