Audio gone in some applications?!?! did Audacity do it?

good evening everyone,

A few hours ago I downloaded and installed Audacity to do some simple audio editing for a Director movie I'm working on. After installing, I opened Audacity when all of a sudden I heard a loud pop and then my audio disappeared (I was watching an TV show using EyeTV at the time). I had to force-quit EyeTV, but when I re-opened it the audio was back with no problems.

however...

I soon realised that I was no longer able to get Director to play audio anymore (however the audio from a quicktime VIDEO within the same director movie works fine, it only seems to be MP3s and the like). I made a Projector of the movie and ran it on another Mac and the audio works fine, so it has nothing to do with the director movie.

Soon after I burnt a CD using Toast, and I noticed that the "DING" sound that plays when a disc has finished burning no longer happens.


EDIT: Did a few more tests and I also don't get any audio in games (tried Call of Duty and No One Lives Forever). In fact, NOLF crashes now whenever i try to load a game!!


what is going on?! i'm pulling my hair out here - i need to finish this Director movie and i can't tell if my Lingo scripts are wokring properly without sound.


I have tried deleting Audacity, restarting the Mac, and repairing permissions with no luck. iTunes still has sound, and iCal alarms still sound in case that gives any clues.

well, i took the cowards way out and completely re-formatted the HDD and reinstalled OS X (was due for it anyway). happy to say the audio prob is gone, which proves it was a software thing.

I have a ton of work to get through and had to get it fixed tonight if i am to stick to deadlines, so formatting was the only way to go.

i am still very interested in any ideas about what people think it might be, because if indeed it was Audacity, then that is one big-ass bug that should be addressed immediately.
 
out of the blue : if you have garage band try to start it and see if your audio problems still there, for whatever reason I saw this solution posted in some other threads and did the job although mainly to do with streaming videos ....

or is there a mute function within audacity that might prevent the audio output ?

hello gig, thanks for the reply.

I had gone into Garageband to check if audio was working prior to re-installing OS X and it did work. However, the checking for audio muting within audacity is a good suggestion. I will try that if I ever gain the courage to install audacity again, right now I'm too afraid that if I do this will happen again!
 
Yeah, I had this same problem. It's a bug in audacity, but basically it requires you to keep your source plugged into your computer. So for me, I imported an interview off an H4 Zoom recorder and then unplugged it. After unplugging the source the audio is gone even though you can navigate within it in audacity. Go figure.
