Into the Breach
I'm using my LCD iMac (and I love it, btw) and it has the Pro Speakers, which definitely sound better than the old USB Pro Speakers, but they use a proprietary jack instead of USB. Now, here's the problem. I NEED more bass in these puppies. The iSub is probably a decent choice for that, but my difficulty is that I really don't know if that will sound good. On my old machine I was using Altec Lansing ATP3s, which sound amazing, if you've ever heard them. I'm prepared to assume that Pro Speakers + iSub should equal that sound. I don't know, though. My dad is using the Altecs because he has an older G4 which doesn't have a Pro Speaker jack. Therefore, instead of him being able to use the Pro Speakers and me being able to use my great sounding Altec Lansings, I get stuck with the Pro Speakers, and because I don't want to waste them and go out and buy another set (completely ditching these beautiful spheres in the process) I'd like to find a way to add GREAT sound to them by adding a bass unit. My mom won't let me throw out the Pro Speakers (I don't want to throw them out, of course, but she equates not using them with throwing them out). Does anyone understand what I'm talking about here? :) Maybe I'm making no sense at all, but whatever. Anyway, does anyone here own a Pro Speaker + iSub setup, and if so, how does it sound? See, buying an iSub costs as much as buying a full set of Altec Lansings, complete with Sub and two good satellites (although, from what I've been able to hear, the new Pro Speaker satellites sound better than the Altecs in terms of clarity and surround, but alas, they have no bass whatsoever and distort heavily in bass-heavy music. Also, the only REALLY annoying thing about the Pro Speakers is that there is no external volume control, which is bad because when I'm playing Unreal Tournament or something I can't change the volume (since I quit the Finder to free up RAM). Also, when I listen to music I have to hear that stupid alert sound every time to check the sound level. I really wish there was a volume control on them, but I guess there's no luck there, is there? Does anyone know of an adapter that allows these new Pro Speaker jack things to plug into standard USB + Power?

Please help, if you can understand what I'm talking about at all.

buy a Griffin iMic. Go to Radio Shack and buy the gold-tipped cable that is an 1/8" stereo jack to stereo RCA male, in as long a length as you need to hook it up to a real stereo system. Then run the "Tape Out" (you're not still recording on tapes, are you?) using the same type of cable to the input on the iMic.

Voila.
