.avi refuses to play

I have an .avi that refuses to play with either divx player or quicktime. What is the most complete player out there that could possibly play it? How can I find out if it's corrupted or simply unsupported by my currently installed programs?

Thanks,

Perian is an excellent QuickTime codec, too. It essentially replaces the Divx decoder, and it handles a lot of other formats, too.

If you open the movie in QuickTime and "Show Movie Inspector" (from the Window menu), what does it say under "format"? If it says "IV50", then that's Intel Indeo video, one of the only formats it really is impossible to play in OS X. You can play it in OS 9, though, with the proper codec.

For AVI, and just about everything else that Quicktime ordinarly can't play, use the Perian plugin for QuickTime, which is free:

For Windows Media Video files, use the free Flip4Mac plugin for QuickTime:

Alternatively, you can use a different video player that supports a larger range of formats:

VideoLan Client (free)

MPlayer (free)
