ID Theft

Be careful when you travel. Listening ot the news just now, a computer consultant was in Indonesia. Left his personal things, wallet, etc, in a safe at his hotel. When teaching a computer class, he did a search on his own name and came up with all his credit card numbers posted to a web site along with loads of others. He traced the domain back to Indonesia. Guess it can happen anywhere though.

Identity theft is a huge deal nowadays, watch your back and know where your wallet/purse is at all times. Have copies of the phone numbers to cancel your credit cards and other important information on hand and just use some common sense :)

Don't let your important mail sit in your mailbox for too long...
it's kind of sad that you have to think about all this stuff nowdays.

Yeah, it really is....but one has to change with the times, and the times have really changed.

Did he use the safe in the room or the hotel safe? Either way, he should have contacted the management of the hotel and provided some documentation on his claim. Any respectable hotel will take steps to ensure such things don't happen (and if it wasn't a respectable hotel, then he should have stayed in one) and it would give him extra protection in case any charges were charged to his card following the theft of the numbers.
And finally, where in Indonesia was this? Big difference in the possibility of being ripped off in Bali (relatively safe for foreigners) vs Jakarta.

Well... at least he was fortunate enough to happen to enter his name and find this info, or he could be in massive debt by now.

At least things turned out okay.
