Back up recommendations?

I have the 17" iMac, running OS X (10.1.5 to be exact) and I want to back up my important files - just in case.
What do you recommend software wise or is it better to just copy to disk the folders?
What files/folders do I absolutely need to backup?

Thanks in advance ;)

Get a CD-RW and backup that way, or an external hard drive.

Any files you've created, browser Favorites, email, etc.

I use ditto (a UNIX command) to back up my home user directory to a 2nd hard drive (external hard drive in your case).

I usually have multiple copies of backups archived over time incase I need to go back to a previous version of whatever file i need.

Hey Chreryl,

This may be overkill for your purposes, but I use Carbon Copy Cloner (find it on verstiontracker) to back up my entire drive to a firewire drive. True, both are in the same house so if I lose it all to a flood or fire, I am toast, but it has saved me a lot of hassle the few times when Apple ugrades or other problems.

You must backup the 2 Library folders (system and user), and of course any file you created (probably placed in your Documents folder).
