Backlight keyboard not working

When I restart my computer, my keyboard backlight doesn't work until I change the keyboard backlight setting. Is that normal?

Could just be the lighting conditions, trying placing your hands just above the speakers (one over each). You might have to move them around slightly to find the sensor but the backlight should come on automatically if the sensors working.

I have a similar problem, though one account has the backlit keyboard but my account does not (on same 15" Powerbook G4).

Have you tried having a look at the keyboard settings? There's an option to turn illumination on and off, pretty obvious but maybe overlooked.
