Backups - Veritas and MAC

Hi. I'm new...grooooan.

I'm currently using Veritas Backup Exec 10 to backup data from an XServe RAID volume. It's backing up at a rate of 100MB/min. Anyone else using this software and if so, what is your current backup rate? I'm running the backup agent on the XServe and backing up to an AIT3 device that should handle at least 300MB/min.

Also, can anyone recommend a backup utility or script? I've added a few more terrabytes to the RAID array and was trying to figure out if I want to mirror the arrays for data protection, or if I can get away with copying the 1st Volumes data to the second without losing permissions and such.

Thanks for any info.

Welcome, Cimmerian!

Not having any prior experience with Veritas, I can only say that if it will clone data bit for bit to a new volume, then no, there won't be any permissions problems. If it doesn't, that standard tricks of the trade here are SuperDuper! and Carbon Copy Cloner. They're free and wonderful, just google 'em.

Take a look at the whitepaper on my site:

Veritas gets the job done, to some extent, but products like Time Navigator and NetVault, since they have been tuned for Mac OS X specifically, should show you greater performance. You may want to take a peek into them.

Also, if you are thinking about mirroring, check out Vicom's Vmirror product. Brand new for Mac OS X and capable of providing real time hardware mirroring and high availability.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Michael
