baffled - can't get monitor to resize

connecting a new macbook pro (for a friend, not mine) to her monitor and we are getting black bars on both sides. We did the "gather windows" did the "detect" checked to make sure the monitor recommended size was correct, I believe it was 1180 x something, and we closed the laptop lid, and still no resizing. What we didn't do was reboot. I've never had this problem. I"ve had blurry picture, and a too large view on a monitor before, but I've never had this problem. Is there something we are missing? Is there a "Wide angle" vs. "square screen" setting

What brand of monitor is this?

Sorry, don't know. worked when it was connected to an older Mac Book. Brand new. Flat screen. Nothing special. Typical. A usual suspect. I'm not sure, but it could be a Dell, HP, Sony, Samsung or "other." Could this actually make a difference? If so, I"ll get that info.
