basic credit card / ecommerce site???

I've never built an ecommerce site before, but have been asked to do so by a client (with a very limited timescale). I'm not even sure how they work in terms of payment and accepting credit cards, etc.

Can anybody explain how it all works, or recommend a good starting point?

Ideally, an easy to use, out of the box, hassle free, all in one, free(ish) solution would be ideal.

OS Commerce would definitely be something to look into.

It's an open-source fully-featured e-commerce solution. All you need is a server with PHP and MySQL to run it. They have an online demo on their site, as well as links to some live shops that use it.

Nice price too...
