Best 2/2.1 Speakers - How Big Can You Go

I currently have Monsoon PlanarMedia 14 2.1 hooked up to my Mac - I hate them. The simple reason is that if you move as little as 1" away from the optimum point, you lose sound quality. In addition, it doesn't fill the room with music. Today I purhcased the Bose Companion 2 Series ($99.00). Unknown to me, you can't (or should not) run it through a subwoofer - Oooops. Great sound but as stand alone speakers, there just isn't enough volume. I am looking for the largest/best sound you can get out of a G5 without running it through a receiver. The primary use is for music (not interested in anything that requires more than 2 speakers). I'm willing to ditch the flat-panel Monsoon speakers, so I can utilize the subwoofer.

Any recommendations? I'll be going to the Apple store tomorrow to see if they can provide a recommendation.

OK, I went to the Apple store today and fortunately found someone who truly understood what I was looking for. Ironically, he directed me to Guitar Center. At GC I discovered the staff is truly versed with the Apple computer. All of their sound demos to deit audio were running on Apple computers. I originally went there to purchase the M-Audio DC4 (149.00 for the pair), but left with KRK Rockit 5 speakers (on sale for $200.00 for the pair). Each speaker is about the size of a 6-pack of cans. These speakers are independently powered and kick out some serious sound. I hooked them up to my subwoofer and it is awesome. If you want serious sound, I would recommend looking into powered speakers. When I went to Circuit City, they had no idea what I was talking about - clueless.
