BLENDER!! OH YEAH!!!

A beta of the long awaited and anticipated Blender is now available at http://www.blender.nl/download

might be /downloads

Anyway, for those of you who are not familiar with blender, here are some key points:

Blender is 3d creation software, much like 3d studio, maya and cinema 4d.

Previously, blender was only available to linux (ppc and x86 and alpha), free bsd (x86), solaris (x86 and sparc), irix (sgi of course), and bloody windows (which it sucks when run under....).

Blender is.... FREE!!!! 100% free. Always will be, too. Blender is not 100% open source, although I think parts of it are.

Blender can be used for Character animation, 3d game design, and still picture animation.

Blender has Python (I think its python.. its been a while) support, so you can, for example, build gravity and allow objects to do funny things when they move.

Blender has a built in render unit, but you can also export to POVray and similar ray-tracing engines.

Blender has Inverse Kenamatics as well as Radiosity. What a kick butt program, huh?

Blender imports/exports almost everything, from autocad to 3dmf. It rocks. And you can render to lots of formats, too.

The only downside to blender is that it is a steep initial learning curve. But if you keep at it and follow as many tuturials as you can, you'll all the sudden become 'in the zone' and blender will be easy as cake.

The beta for mac os x isn't very stable, and I crashed my computer to the point where kill -9 wouldn't kill it off and I had to shutdown. But it is VERY encouraging. If you are at all into 3d design or game design, this is something you can't afford to miss.

Give it a serious try, and if the beta is just too crashy for ya, download the linux version or something and use it on your other computer (which, as a true macosx user, you must have at least one other computer..)

Merry Christmas everyone, and have a great holiday.
