boot from OSX DVD using external display?

Hi. I own an old powerbook "titanium" (2002). Since the display is broken, I use it connected to an external display with no problems. Today, I tried to start-up from the OS DVD (Tiger) but, not surprisingly, the external monitor is black. Thus, I feel like whatever happens I can't fix it the good old way, initializing the disk and starting all over.
OK, I WILL buy a new machine, but since this can still be of some use, is there any way around it? Thank you.

put a magnet in the upperleft of the trackpad.
then the internal screen, trackpad and keyboard should be disabled.

there is a small magnet inside the screen that usually does that job, but it's just put there witt a piece of sticky tape. maybe it dropped..

google for powerbook magnet external screen etc..

External keyboard and mouse helps. Simply keep the lid closed and voilà: The external monitor's used. No need for magnets.

yeah.. you're probably right. i already asumed the lid was closed, but that's actually not clear from ale's post.

First of all, thanks to both of you. I haven't had the time to try the magnet trick, but I'm confused by Fryke's post. If I close the lid, doesn't the system go to sleep? Sorry, I know I must be missing something, but I don't know what!
