I cannot get past the loggin screen. I don't know the password. I just bought it second hand today for my daughter. if somebody could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated. Would like to have it ready before X-mas

Did you get the CDs/DVDs that came wth that computer? If not, make sure you get them from the seller unless otherwise specified that it wasn't included.

If they weren't included in the sale, then you're going ot have to purchase a version of OS X (which I recommend). Either Panther (which is 10.3.x but it cheaper) or Tiger (which is the latest version of OS X but a little more expensive than Panther) will suit you fine if you choose to buy it.
