Booting OS 9 on new PowerMacs

Oh. Erhm... This is _not_ about software piracy. Lemme reread the rules shortly... Okay. As far as I can see, the word 'hacks' is used in the board rules only where software piracy or actual hacking (of other people's computers) is involved.

One could argue that this lets you actually use an OS you haven't got a license for, but I guess that's not the case, since by using Classic you're using it all the same. Also, the software is _provided_ by Apple, you're only using it a different and unintended way.

Also: I haven't yet heard reviews of the 'hack' (no positives, no negatives) so far, and I guess it's 'Macintosh News' and people have been discussing this very subject ever since Steve Jobs said that hardware sold in 2003 wouldn't boot OS 9.

and I smell funny

The interesting bit, as I see it, is that this clearly shows that it has nothing to do with hardware support. Yes, you won't find drivers for AirPort Extreme or FireWire 800 under OS 9, maybe, but basically, these Macs are still Macs - Apple hasn't gotten rid of any legacy hardware/software that would prevent the machines from booting Nine.

Sorry, we were just having a little fun. The only thing I've changed was hacker to h*ck*r in his post.

If you want some real fun, go to the Café, start a thread with a question, and as soon as the answers are in, change the question. :p

This is what we in the industry call a "bogus hint." ;) It won't make your new Mac boot OS 9. All it does is install an OS 9 system folder onto your hard drive, which is already there as part of OS X's Classic environment anyway.

Then why do we in the industry get as much positive as negative reports?

Seems to me like there are some new machines that actually CAN boot OS 9 that way and others that can't.

I haven't seen a single report on the net from someone who has booted a new Mac into OS 9. Can you put up a url?

Chris

I've had some reports mailed to me, although they _could_ be fake - although I wouldn't quite understand why one would fake such a report. MacBidouille - http://macbidouille.com - which originally posted the tip has more info. Lemme look it up:

http://macnews.net.tc/cgi-bin/blosxom.cgi/2003/feb/25

(A link to the MacBidouille followup can be found there.)

As far as I can see, the followup posts another solution, which apparently _works_ even if the first one fails. However, it's a bit more complicated.

My stance, though, is that booting OS 9 is still possible with new hardware. Not to get me wrong... I _don't_ like that fact.

Thanks Frycke,

I don't think anyone would fake a report. Could they just be making an argument that it should work, or are they actual first hand reports? I, for one, don't have a machine to test it on, but I've seen hints on the web, and discussion over at MacNN (I think) and nobody reported success, if I remember right.

I don't really care either way. I'm 100% on X and just take Apple's word that the new machines don't boot 9.
