Bridging an old APE with a new APE

I can't give you specifics because it would require I go and write down all the serial numbers, etc. but you should be able to follow. There are two computers and two airport expresses. APE05 is b/g and APE09 is n. The 09MacBookPro is the one that will be furthest away from the base station because the old MacBook has to be in the room nearest the modem and ethernet and the new MacBookPro is in the room 50 feet away.

Scenario 1:
If I configure the APE05 b/g to be the base station and the APE09 n to be the WDS bridge, I get an error and the airport utility cannot find the base station. Then, they both go yellow. then flashing. then nothing works. However, each work fine separately; each get internet download speeds of over 5. The caveat however is that just because there was an error one time doesn't mean there will be an error the next time. Often, you can do the same thing over and over and actually get different results. So, if this is just a glitch and someone can actually share a step by step so i can see whether this was just a fluke, than we can try this again and go for it. But...the 2 times I've done this....I have had to do hard resets on both APEs.

Scenario 2:
If I configure the APE09 n to be the base station and the APE05 to be the WDS bridge, they "work" when they are 10 feet apart, and the computers are practically on top of each other, but if you move them to be, well, um, like useful, the APE05 appears to do nothing.

Doing a speed test on the new $1800 MacBookPro when it is where it has to be (in the further location), I get speeds up to 3 on my downloads. I get 2.75 on my 2002 iBook and 2.75 on my 2001 G4 in that same room. If you disconnect the APE 05 or move it around in various places, nothing changes.

Scenario 3:
I can put the APE05 directly under the MacBookPro, the APE reads a signal, it is 4 feet away from the 09 MacbookPro and I get download Internet speeds of up to 2.75

Also please note, to reiterate: when you are in the same room of either the b/g configured as the base station or the n configured as the base station, the download speeds for the MacbookPro are 5.25 and 5.6 and that's about as good as it's going to get with bankrupt charter communications in North Carolina.

So, we know that everything works fine.

Here are the questions:
1. If I am able to actually get the b/g to network with the n APE with the b/g as the base station and the n as the bridge, will this help the newer Macbookpro? Or, can this be done?

2. Now, remember, buying the APE Extreme for $179 isn't an answer as we already bought the $100 express to bridge with the old $100 express and these both work fine in the same room either connected to the ethernet and either standing alone.

However, I am willing to replace the old $100 express with a new $100 express (just throw money at the problem) if indeed there is no way absolutely now way to get the b/g APE to bridge with the n APE so the new MacBookPro can connect to the internet faster than an 8 year old G4 (which is one of the main reasons I spent $1800).

Thanks.

PS Tomorrow I'll spend time with the time vampire and call Apple support and well go through all the "name, address, what is the problem? I'm sorry, did you say "chicago," serial number, make model where when who? But in the meantime any other help is greatly appreciated.

This could probably be in the "HOW TOs" but what I did was:

Step one: USE the newest computer to configure everything! I recalled someone gave me that advise once....so if you have a couple computers, be sure and use the newest for the airport configuration and set up.

I did a hard reset on both devices.
I set up the network names.
I used the "N" for the base station (the newest APE) and the b/g for the bridge.
I am now getting 5.25 from the furthest away (best prior was 2.75).

I tried to setup with b/g as the base and n as the bridge and it crashed....so I did the hard reset and started over.
All works like a charm right now.
