Broadband Access: How sweet it is, how sweet it is...

I finally took my PowerMac G3 into school today. WOW, what a difference a REAL internet connection makes in performance. Netscape 6.2.1 was no longer a slow moving sloth. Pages loaded VERY VERY fast, there was no lag whatsoever, pictures, text, BLAM - on the screen! Of course, the really nice surprise was getting the 10.1.2 update in about a minute. The campus here is rigged with 1Gb ethernet, the chemistry department has 100Mb ethernet and 10Mb ethernet. I was connected to a 10Mb hub and was downloading files at 400MB/sec, or so Netscape said I was. Mac OS X seems a little more responsive with the new update with lightening fast networking. I'm in heaven...oh, oh, I don't want to go home...

Also, got to experience Quake 3 Arena as it was meant to be played. Is Cable Access this fast? DSL?

The fastest I've ever seen on my connection is 833KB/s.(about 6.6Mb/s). I have a wireless connection, which was supposed to be capped at 1.5Mb/s but I guess it wasn't, but it is now.

Cable can range anywhere from <10K/s to > 300K/s.
DSL is usually more stable around 80-150K/s depending on the speed you get from your ISP.

Anyways, it sure beats dialup. :)

My cable connection is usually around 350kb. My understanding is that 350 is at the low end of what cable connections get. When I had dsl it was around 200kb.

I've never heard of a cable connection at 10kb. I wouldn't pay a dime for that (or course I don't pay for my current connection either).

I guess you haven't heard of Rogers Cable here in Canada? It's not typical, but some people have a lot of problems with it, and sometimes get really crappy speeds, like the 10k I said before. Anyways, I wouldn't want to go with them, just because they are a huge monopoly here.

Sorry my friends but this particular post has nothing to do with Apple or computers in general. My question for you Chemistry Geek is Are you really good at chemistry? I am taking it in school and it is hard as hell, I cant for the life of me grasp the concepts of moles and measurement conversions and what not. I do understand how to draw lewis structures and things like that but the math that accompanys these problems is killing me, how do you handle equations like this, what in your mind gives you the power to decipher this type of knowlege?

Sorry everyone just had to get that out.
Im really looking forward to Macworld SF, I can smell G5s in the air!

isn't it nice c_g? i know my dsl is not quite as fast as the school's connect but for most things it seems that way. you must live right to have timed your experiment with the 10.1.2 release!!:)

The RoadRunner connections here in Rochester were not articifially capped until recently. People that lived in rural areas (not me) got very upset because their network connections got capped at 2Mbps. It seems that since there were few customers in the rural areas, people got used to getting a full 10Mbps. When TimeWarner added more customers and speeds dropped to normal (around 2Mbps) edxisting customers got very upset with them. Now all connections are capped at 2Mbps regardless of how busy the network is where you live.

I never had the full 10Mbps. then again 2Mbps is fast enough in all but few cases. :D

I have Adelphia's PowerLink cable access. Running the speed test at dslreports.com gives me readings of 1500 - 3200 kbps, depending on the time of day. A recent test showed 2152 kbps, which the site says is equivalent to a browser download speed of 262.6 k/sec.
Love it!

To theCaptain:

Yes, I 'm a real chemist and a graduate student. I also teach 3 classes a semester, usually the laboratory sections of General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis. We cover specifically the calculations involving the convention of moles, unit conversion, and stoichiometry. The secret to succeeding with these calculations is to know and understand all three of what I mentioned above. You have to know what units the answer requires, and the numbers with units that with a little manipulation, will give you what you need. If you need help write again.

Chemistry Geek,
Thank you so much for responding. If I ever have a concept that I simply can not grasp, it looks like you are the one to talk to. I just took my exam last week and I am crossing my fingers, but I have a bad feeling about it.
