Broken TiBook Hinge

lurk

Mitä?
Well it was bound to happen sooner or later. My daughter broke my TiBook by using it to verify that gravity is still working. It is.

The right hinge broke off, well it looks like there is a long bit that goes into the screen that broke off. Has anybody had any experience with this sort of thing? How should I go about getting a replacement hinge and installing it? Finally, are there any wires going through the right hinge that I need to be careful of?

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks they have the part I need for $200 and I also found another source for $169 but that is only the beginning of the process. Apparently the whole screen is epoxied together and you need to break it apart to replace this part. They suggested putting it in the freezer to help crack the glue :(

It sounds like quite the project. Well I guess that I'll just have to go through with it since I cannot see paying the $1600 Apple wants to fix it. I'll take lots of pictures and make a web site out of it I guess. Ha Ha.

Edited to fix atrocious spelling errors...

is the hinge broken or just the hinge cover? is the LCD still attached to the TiBook on both sides?

take a lot of pictures!!

It is the hinge which broke. There is a long finger which goes up into the LCD to support the screen -- that broke off. So now the hinge on the right hand side is free to turn independent of the LCD.

Just for fun here is a picture of the PB and the culprit's little brother.

How do people make those show up inline?

Edited to add that that picture is pre-breakage but that is the little footstool it tipped off of. I had a habit of setting it there when I was working on the couch.

actually you did it correctly. but if you check out the forum rules at the bottom left hand corner of this page you will see that img code is turned off for this forum. hence you get a link rather than a display.

It was not even really a fall so much as a slide and a plop - nothing terribly violent. It must have just hit wrong. :(

Ed: Thanks for the IMG info I saw that the tag was turned off but I didn't realize that it was forum specific. I assumed it was because I had misconfigured my profile.
