browser unable to resolve hostname

Hi,

I have MacOS X 10.1.5 with Internet Explorer, but since I've had some problems with the latest version of IE I wanted to try another browser, so I downloaded Mozilla and Netscape to see if they were better. They start up fine, but for some reason they can't resolve hostnames.
Writing the actual ip address works, that is if I get the ip address for www.apple.com with a different program and put it in the address bar the site loads up, but when I use "www.apple.com" the browser statusbar says "Resolving host" and nothing more.
Is there any way to fix this?
Both mozilla and netscape have the same problem.. I've even tried two different versions of mozilla.

Thanks,
/Erik

If your ISP requires you to set a DNS server address then you will need to check it ius entered in your Network Preferences Pane.

You can check to see if DNS resolution is working by opening a terminal and trying to ping a server: ping www.apple.com. If it resolves to the IP address, then your DNS is working correctly and the problem is somewhere else.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!
ping apple.com and ping www.apple.com works fine, and if I copy the actual IP address I get then into the mozilla firebird address bar the site loads up. The same with other sites, the problem is that the browser doesn't resolve the name to the IP address.
Everything works with Internet Explorer though..
It's the same with localhost, 127.0.0.1 works but not localhost, if I want to view the site on the same computer.
I've checked the preferences but there's no DNS server to enter there.. but all other apps work like ICQ and MSN Messenger.. shouldn't all apps get DNS servers etc. from the System Preferences?

Thanks,
/Erik
