bsd sub system

this may sound stuped!!
but just what is the bsd subsystem
and do we need it?
i cant find out eneywhere what this is for
please help:confused:
 
"BSD subsystem" is not a very clear name for it, I agree.

It's a collection of commandline programs - I don't really know what ones are in there, because I just installed it right off the bat, I haven't anything to compare it to.

Not installing it should not really impair your system at all, and you should always be able to install it later. If you keep trying command-line hacks people suggest here, and getting "command not found" error messages, that might be the cause though.
 
...but the BSD subsystem is the real UNIX-y part of Mac OS X, and it is optional because average consumer-level users should not need to use the terminal to do stuff one would do in, say, Linux or a BSD variant. The idea is that Mac OS X has all the power of UNIX, but without the command line crap. However, if you want to have all the advanced features of a Unix-based OS, you really should install the BSD subsystem. It doesn't change your OS X experience until you decide to actually explore all mit has to offer.
