Built-in audio 24 or 16 bit?

I like the sound of the built-in preamp but am not sure what sample rate and bit depth is.
When I check the "more info" in "about this Mac"
It shows formats PCM 16, PCM 24 and AC3 16.
PCM 24 is 24bit and g32, 44.1, 48, 64, 88.2, 96 Khz Sample rate.
How do I make sure that whatever I record is recorded in 24 bit and 44.1Khz?
Thanks

i'm not sure what mac you have, so i'm assuming you have a power mac.

Power Mac G4's had a maximum of 16-bit, but the G5's are rated at 24-bit, 44.1khz sample rate.

most recording programs will let you configure it, but the program wiretap appears to default to 16-bit.

Thank you.
I have G5 iMac 2.1Ghz.
Ableton Live is the program I am using to record. It is set to 24-bit and 44.1Khz.
So I just wonder if the signal is no less than that when it reaches the porgram.
How do I make sure?
Cheers

I have very little experience with audio recording, but I've seen some settings in Audio MIDI Setup (which is not all about MIDI, despite the name) that may be useful. You can change the bit depth and frequency of output and input (I'm not 100% sure about input, since the machine I'm on at the moment has no audio input). Audio MIDI Setup is located in /Applications/Utilities.

any good software will (should?) retrieve this information from the system itsself, and present you the options.
