Built-in RAM in ibook G4... disappeared!

Hi! I'm using 1,2 g4 ibook, with 256mb ram built-in& 256mb added-on. Today, I've started the activity monitor for some purpouse and saw that it shows that I have only 256mb available. I've checked the profiler- the onboard ram was marked "empty"! The computer doesn't actually seem to work much slower than usual(not as it would with 256 ram), but I guess it makes my os a little "confused":) making it more sluggish. I never really met with that kind of problem, I hope it's not really serious. Could someone please tell me what's going on? I'd be grateful for any advice!

If you take out the additional ram, does it still boot? If not, then the onboard ram is obviously not usable at all.

Probably there's a bad connection on the motherboard somewhere, and only the additional ram is reachable. This happened in my wife's G3 iMac - only one ram slot works of the two.

It would likely take a motherboard replacement to get this fixed (well, it might actually be as little as a drop of solder in the right place, but they're probably replace your mobo and figure out the problem in the old one at their leisure...)
