burning mp3 CD

I have recently started having problems when burning mp3 and audio CDs. The files on the mp3 CDs aren't all recognized and the audio CDs have various playback difficulties. I use both Toast 6 or Dragon Burn. I have a 6 year old iMac G3 and the burner is an external LaCie. I am running Tiger. Up until recently I have had only success while burning. I can't think of anything major I have changed that could have created this problem. It can't be the brand of CD I'm using [Sony], because the problems started while I was halfway through this spindle. They aren't old either. I have noticed it takes longer to burn each disc than it used to also. It actually burns a lot slower than it indicates that it is. I do usually have some things running at the same time I'm burning, but nothing that monopolizes cpu usage.
Please help.
 
Try the burner, with the same software, connected to another Mac.
If the problem does not appear - it is your Mac at fault.
If the problem does persists - it is most likely due to the LaCe burner. If so, then consider replacing the burner mechanism with another CD burner or perhaps a CD / DVD burner.
 
Since it isn't possible for me to reproduce the circumstances on another Mac, perhaps if I ran TechTool and executed some of its utilities, that would possibly fix the 'Mac' problem. The burner is only about 2 years old. I was hoping it wouldn't be the problem.
 
Are you keeping the burn speed down? All Music data should be kept to between 8 and 16, otherwise players can have a problem interpreting it.
I lost a Lacie drive once. Broke my heart. Still, went out and bought a new cheaper drive and was happy again.

Thanks for your response. I actually did try again with a slower burn speed and got a successful result. Also, I do a lot downloading and installing of new files, so I have started a new routine of fixing system preferences every other day. Just in case.
