Cable Modem Problems

Ok, I have a wierd problem that has been happening recently and I don´t really know how to take care of it. The thing is that I´m using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem, I recently moved into this apartment and a friend of mine has a Compaq (what I´m using now) and he uses USB to connect, anyways, I used to be able connecto my PowerBook G4 550mhz to the cable modem, do a reset to the modem, and use the internet without problem, now when I do this, it doesn´t recognize that its connected to the internet. Now the network control in OS X says the IP is Self Assigned and is 169...... if I reset the modem it will change to DHCP assigned but still doesn´t connect to the web and changes back right away to Self Assigned. I can easily reconnect the Compaq to the net but the PowerBook doesn´t want anything to do with it. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, thanks!

Try resetting the modem (and router too if you have one) and let it sit for about 45 seconds... Just pressing the reset button doesn't reset the modem (router also) fully.
At least that's the case on my toshiba.
